Volunteer Opportunities With the Environmental Center and our Member Groups

  • The Deschutes River Conservancy needs 8 volunteers for their upcoming event in McKay Park on Saturday, September 13th. They need a total of eight folks to help manage the perimeter of the Deschutes Brewery beer garden.  Volunteers will work in two hour shifts.  One shift will be from 1:00 – 3:00 and the other shift will be from 3:00 – 5:00.  Contact Bea at bea@deschutesriver.org or 385-4077 xt. 23.
     
  • The 9th Annual Green & Solar Home Tour presented by 3EStrategies requires a lot of volunteer support. We need your help in preparation for the event and during the tour on October 11th and 12th. Share your talents by greeting at a home, making phone calls, leading groups and helping with PR and marketing. You’ll become part of a great team doing good work and having fun.   • Volunteers Needed on September 27th for Evening for the Environment.   Volunteers are needed to help make our annual fundraiser a success.  If you have a few hours to help us out on September 27th we offer free admission to the event, food and a refreshing beverage.  Please call Karyn at 541-385-6908 ext. 13 or email karyn@envirocenter.org.  We need volunteers for the following positions:
    1.) Food prep (2 people)
    2.) Post event clean up (4-5 people)

  • Mentor Students with Wolftree!  They are currently looking for individuals with some natural resource, education, or science background (or those that are just passionate about our natural environment) that are interested in coming out to assist in mentoring youth about our local streams and forests.  Programs usually run from around nine to two, and last from one to two days.   • Volunteer to Teach Kids About Watersheds in October!  Salmon Watch is a unique educational experience that fulfills many diverse learning objectives that are impossible to accomplish while inside a classroom. The goals of Salmon Watch include: fostering a deeper connection between students and the ecosystem, cultivating the recognition of salmon as an important indicator of watershed and environmental health, and building environmental stewardship by engaging students in service learning restoration projects.  Salmon Watch students from Mountain View High, Pilot Butte Middle, Sisters High, Sisters Middle School, and Rimrock Expeditionary Alternative Middle School (REALMS) will be gearing up for their streamside field trips this October.  Volunteers are needed October 6-17 on various days to lead learning stations for students.  Contact Kolleen Yake at 541.382.6103 ext.33 or kyake@restorethedeschutes.org.

  • ADOPT THE AREA YOU PLAY IN! Take care of our waterways by adopting them!  With the Oregon Adopt-A-River program SOLV provides the materials and project support, so that you can successfully keep your special place beautiful.

  • Volunteer mappers needed to "ground truth" eastern Oregon Wilderness Proposals.  Maps and instructions will be provided.  A great way to get out in the woods and do some hiking and camping to verify boundaries of roadless areas that they hope to designate Wilderness in their ongoing Oregon Wild wilderness campaign.  Volunteers should have experience navigating using a map and compass.  Call 541-382-2616 or email tl@oregonwild.org.

  • Volunteer with the Juniper Group, Sierra Club.  They need volunteers for monthly environmental education nights, newsletter editing and people to help with hands-on restoration and forest monitoring projects. 

  • The Sunriver Nature Center and Observatory needs volunteers to work as program guides, gardeners, at special events and in the Second Tern Thrift Store.  Contact Kathy at 541-593-4442.

  • Join the Bend SNIP trapping team!  They are looking for volunteers to trap feral cats and bring them into the clinic to be spayed, neutered, and vaccinated.  Can you help them help these animals before kitten season?  Contact Sharon for more information.  They are also looking for a committed group of people to work weekend adoption events at locations such as PetSmart and PetCo.  It's a fun and rewarding way to help stray cats and kittens find a forever home!

  • The Central Oregon Trail Alliance always needs volunteers for trail building and maintenance activities.  COTA is a volunteer group that works in conjunction with the USFS, BLM and other land managers to build and maintain trails in Central Oregon. COTA is an IMBA affiliated club, interested in creating, enhancing and preserving trail opportunities for mountain bikers.  Our objective is to get fellow trail users to join us out on the trails.  Check our website for trailwork opportunities. The trails need your help!

  • East Cascade Bird Conservancy Most of our projects focus on Central Oregon in three counties (Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson).  We are highly dependent on volunteers to help complete the field work.  Most projects require little or no birding experience.  All  we require is that you have enthusiasm and a sense of fun.  Full training is provided.  View our current opportunities at www.ecbcbirds.org

  • Oregon Natural Desert Association. A rewarding way to get involved in desert and wild lands preservation is by volunteering on a restoration project. ONDA leads a number of volunteer trips each year ranging from multi-day backpacking trips to single day hikes. The trips focus on the removal of obsolete barbed wire fence, road closures, riparian restoration and invasive species control. The purpose of ONDA's Restoration Program is to introduce people to Oregon's high desert, restore and preserve its wilderness qualities, and grow advocates for its long lasting protection.
